1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 A shadow passed over the expressive face of the statesman. "Verygrave results indeed."
2. We all turned round at the words. There, framed in the doorway, was a tall and beautiful woman- the mysterious lodger of Bloomsbury.Slowly she advanced, her face pale and drawn with a frightfulapprehension, her eyes fixed and staring, her terrified gaze rivetedupon the dark figure on the floor.
3. "I think that you know me well enough, Watson, to understand thatI am by no means a nervous man. At the same time, it is stupidityrather than courage to refuse to recognize danger when it is closeupon you. Might I trouble you for a match?" He drew in the smoke ofhis cigarette as if the soothing influence was grateful to him."I must apologize for calling so late," said he, "and I must furtherbeg you to be so unconventional as to allow me to leave your housepresently by scrambling over your back garden wall."
4. "You mean the West Country bankers," said he. "They failed for amillion, ruined half the county families of Cornwall, and Neligandisappeared."
5. Our client had sat up with staring eyes and every tinge of colourstruck from his astonished face.
6. Holmes turned the body over reverently, and examined it with greatattention. He then sat in deep thought for a time, and I could seeby his ruffied brow that this grim discovery had not, in hisopinion, advanced us much in our inquiry.

1. Holmes turned over the leaves of the book upon his knee."Here it is," said he presently:
2. "I have long known, sir, how high is your sense of public duty,"said he. "I am convinced that in the case of a secret of thisimportance it would rise superior to the most intimate domestic ties. The European Secretary bowed.
3. "Yes, Baynes, I've seen it. Pray don't think it a liberty if Igive you a word of friendly warning.
4. "Well," said he, at last, "I suppose I shall have to come out andhave a look at it."
5. "Well, Mr. Holmes, from the moment that I understood that therewas something about that suite of rooms which I was not to know, I wasall on fire to go over them. It was not mere curiosity, though Ihave my share of that. It was more a feeling of duty-a feeling thatsome good might come from my penetrating to this place. They talk ofwoman's instinct; perhaps it was woman's instinct which gave me thatfeeling. At any rate, it was there, and I was keenly on the lookoutfor any chance to pass the forbidden door.
6. "I thought Van Seddar was going next week."

1. "Would you do this?"
2. "Precisely. It is a woman's."
3. "A cold hand seemed to close round my heart. Someone, then, was inthat room where my precious treaty lay upon the table. I ranfrantically up the stair and along the passage. There was no one inthe corridors, Mr. Holmes. There was no one in the room. All wasexactly as I left it, save only that the papers which had beencommitted to my care had been taken from the desk on which they lay.The copy was there, and the original was gone."
4. "It's a mongoose," I cried.
5. "Very good, Mr. Holmes. It is only in your client's interests that Iprotested. The matter is so very delicate-"
6. "Criminals?" said Holmes. "Plural?"

1. "Put it down! Down, this instant, Watson- this instant, I say!"His head sank back upon the pillow and he gave a deep sigh of reliefas I replaced the box upon the mantelpiece. "I hate to have mythings touched, Watson. You know that I hate it. You fidget mebeyond endurance. You, a doctor- you are enough to drive a patientinto an asylum. Sit down, man, and let me have my rest!"The incident left a most unpleasant impression upon my mind. Theviolent and causeless excitement, followed by this brutality ofspeech, so far removed from his usual suavity, showed me how deepwas the disorganization of his mind. Of all ruins, that of a noblemind is the most deplorable. I sat in silent dejection until thestipulated time had passed. He seemed to have been watching theclock as well as I, for it was hardly six before he began to talk withthe same feverish animation as before.
2. It was pitch-dark and without a moon, but Mason led us over thegrasslands until a dark mass loomed tip in front of us which proved tobe the ancient chapel. We entered the broken gap which was once theporch, and our guide, stumbling among heaps of loose masonry, pickedhis way to the corner of the building, where a steep stair led downinto the crypt. Striking a match, he illuminated the Melancholy place-dismal and evil-smelling, with ancient crumbling walls of rough-hewnstone, and piles of coffins, some of lead and some of stone, extendingupon one side right up to the arched and groined roof which lostitself in the shadows above our heads. Holmes had lit his lantern, which shot a tiny tunnel of vivid yellow light upon the mournfulscene. Its rays were reflected back from the coffin-plates, many ofthem adorned with the griffin and coronet of this old family whichcarried its honours even to the gate of Death.
3. "There was a coloured gaslamp inside which was turned so low thatI could see little save that the hall was of some size and hung withpictures. In the dim light I could make out that the person who hadopened the door was a small, mean-looking, middle-aged man withrounded shoulders. As he turned towards us the glint of the lightshowed me that he was wearing glasses.
4、 46, OLD JEWRY,
5、 "Let us be practical," said he. "I understand you to say thatthere are three students who use this stair, and are in the habit ofpassing your door?"

"Ah, thank heaven!" His face became radiant. "The Prime Ministeris lunching with me. May he share your hopes? He has nerves ofsteel, and yet I know that he has hardly slept since this terribleevent. Jacobs, will you ask the Prime Minister to come up? As toyou, dear, I fear that this is a matter of politics. We will joinyou in a few minutes in the dining-room."

{ Holmes and I put on our dress-clothes, so that we might appear to betwo theatre-goers homeward bound. In Oxford Street we picked up ahansom and drove to an address in Hampstead. Here we paid off our cab,and with our great coats buttoned up, for it was bitterly cold, andthe wind seemed to blow through us, we walked along the edge of theheath.

"We went upstairs together, the colonel first with the lamp, the fatmanager and I behind him. It was a labyrinth of an old house, withcorridors, passages, narrow winding staircases, and little lowdoors, the thresholds of which were hollowed out by the generationswho had crossed them. There were no carpets and no signs of anyfurniture above the ground floor, while the plaster was peeling offthe walls, and the damp was breaking through in green, unhealthyblotches. I tried to put on as unconcerned an air as possible, but Ihad not forgotten the warnings of the lady, even though Idisregarded them, and I kept a keen eye upon my two companions.Ferguson appeared to be a morose and silent man, but I could seefrom the little that he said that he was at least a fellow-countryman."Colonel Lysander Stark stopped at last before a low door, whichhe unlocked. Within was a small, square room, in which the three of uscould hardly get at one time. Ferguson remained outside, and thecolonel ushered me in.
