2. "`No, I forbid you. I won't have a fuss made about suchnonsense.'
3. What Sherlock Holmes was about to suggest will never be known, forat this moment the door opened and a young lady was shown into theroom. As she appeared Mr. Bennett sprang up with a cry and ran forwardwith his hands out to meet those which she had herself outstretched."Edith, dear! Nothing the matter, I hope?"
4. Once more, however, my friend was destined to be disappointed. Hecame back at night weary and unsuccessful.
5. "None."
6. "Well we have been married now for a year, and very happy we havebeen. But about a month ago, at the end of June, I saw for the firsttime signs of trouble. One day my wife received a letter from America.I saw the American stamp. She turned deadly white, read the letter, and threw it into the fire. She made no allusion to it afterwards, andI made none, for a promise is a promise, but she has never known aneasy hour from that moment. There is always a look of fear upon herface- a look as if she were waiting and expecting. She would do betterto trust me. She would find that I was her best friend. But untilshe speaks, I can say nothing. Mind you, she is a truthful woman,Mr. Holmes, and whatever trouble there may have been in her pastlife it has been no fault of hers. I am only a simple Norfolksquire, but there is not a man in England who ranks his familyhonour more highly than I do. She knows it well, and she knew itwell before she married me. She would never bring any stain upon it-of that I am sure.

1. Sherlock Holmes was too irritable for conversation and toorestless for sleep. I left him smoking hard, with his heavy, darkbrows knotted together, and his long, nervous fingers tapping upon thearms of his chair, as he turned over in his mind every possiblesolution of the mystery. Several times in the course of the night Iheard him prowling about the house. Finally, just after I had beencalled in the morning, he rushed into my room. He was in hisdressing-gown, but his pale, hollow-eyed face told me that his nighthad been a sleepless one.
2. "It was a prosaic way of forming a friendship, but it was effective.I was laid by the heels for ten days, and Trevor used to come in toinquire after me. At first it was only a minute's chat, but soon hisvisits lengthened, and before the end of the term we were closefriends. He was a hearty, full-blooded fellow, full of spirits andenergy, the very opposite to me in most respects, but we had somesubjects in common, and it was a bond of union when I found that hewas as friendless as I. Finally he invited me down to his father'splace at Donnithorpe, in Norfolk, and I accepted his hospitality for amonth of the long vacation.
3. "It was when he horsewhipped Sam Brewer, the well-known CurzonStreet money-lender, on Newmarket Heath. He nearly killed the man.""Ah, he sounds interesting! Does he often indulge in that way?""Well, he has the name of being a dangerous man. He is about themost daredevil rider in England- second in the Grand National a fewyears back. He is one of those men who have overshot their truegeneration. He should have been a buck in the days of the Regency- aboxer, an athlete, a plunger on the turf, a lover of fair ladies, and,by all account, so far down Queer Street that he may never find hisway back again."
4. Holmes strolled round the house with his hands in his pockets anda negligent air which was unusual with him.
5. "'Kindly let me see them.'
6. "If I can be of use."

1. "`That white one with the barred tail, right in the middle ofthe flock.'
2. "Because he was handy and would come cheap."
3. "It looks like a flight."
4. Lord Cantlemere was very angry. Some of the ancient firesflickered up into his sallow checks.
5. "And the note?" I asked.
6. But there was no great difficulty in the first stage of myadventure. Upper Swandam Lane is a vile alley lurking behind thehigh wharves which line the north side of the river to the east ofLondon Bridge. Between a slop-shop and a gin-shop, approached by asteep flight of steps leading down to a black gap like the mouth ofa cave, I found the den of which I was in search. Ordering my cab towait, I passed down the steps, worn hollow in the centre by theceaseless tread of drunken feet and by the light of a flickeringoillamp above the door I found the latch and made my way into along, low room, thick and heavy with the brown opium smoke, andterraced with wooden berths, like the forecastle of an emigrant ship.Through the gloom one could dimly catch a glimpse of bodies lying instrange fantastic poses, bowed shoulders, bent knees, heads thrownback, and chins pointing upward, with here and there a dark,lack-lustre eye turned upon the newcomer. Out of the black shadowsthere glimmered little red circles of light, now bright, now faint, asthe burning poison waxed or waned in the bowls of the metal pipes. Themost lay silent, but some muttered to themselves, and others talkedtogether in a strange, low, monotonous voice, their conversationcoming in gushes, and then suddenly tailing off into silence, eachmumbling out his own thoughts and paying little heed to the words ofhis neighbour. At the farther end was a small brazier of burningcharcoal, beside which on a three-legged wooden stool there sat atall, thin old man, with his jaw resting upon his two fists, and hiselbows upon his knees, staring into the fire.

2. "Near the right temple?"
3. "Tobacco and my work, but now only tobacco," the old manexclaimed. "Alas! what a fatal interruption! Who could have foreseensuch a terrible catastrophe? So estimable a young man! I assure youthat, after a few months' training, he was an admirable assistant. What do you think of the matter, Mr. Holmes?"
4、 "It is to him that this trophy belongs."
5、 "What time was the funeral? Eight, was it not?" he asked eagerly."Well, it is 7:30 now. Good heavens, Watson, what has become of anybrains that God has given me? Quick, man, quick! It's life or death- ahundred chances on death to one on life. I'll never forgive myself, never, if we are too late!"

"I have to be emphatic, Mr. Holmes, for the time is so limited. Iwould not have him find me here for the world. He is almost due now.But I was so situated that I could not come earlier. His secretary,Mr. Ferguson, only told me this morning of his appointment with you.""And you are his manager?"

I find it recorded in my notebook that it was a bleak and windy day, towards the end of March in the year 1892. Holmes had received atelegram while we sat at our lunch, and he had scribbled a reply. Hemade no remark, but the matter remained in his thoughts, for hestood in front of the fire afterwards with a thoughtful face, smoking his pipe, and casting an occasional glance at the message.Suddenly he turned upon me with a mischievous twinkle in his eyes."I suppose, Watson, We must look upon you as a man of letters," saidhe. "How do you define the word 'grotesque'?"

"`Not so many as you might think,' he answered. `You see itis really confined to Londoners, and to grown men. This Americanhad started from London when he was young, and he wanted to do theold town a good turn. Then, again, I have heard it is no use yourapplying if your hair is light red, or dark red, or anything butreal bright, blazing, fiery red. Now, if you cared to apply, Mr.Wilson, you would just walk in; but perhaps it would hardly beworth your while to put yourself out of the way for the sake of afew hundred pounds.'

{ "Your Grace can hardly have heard of any small reputation which Ipossess, or you would not imagine that it is so easy to escape me. Mr.Reuben Hayes was arrested at Chesterfield, on my information, ateleven o'clock last night. I had a telegram from the head of the localpolice before I left the school this morning."

      "Oh, Mr. Sherlock Holmes!" she cried, glancing from one to the otherof us, and finally, with a woman's quick intuition, fastening uponmy companion, "I am so glad that you have come. I have driven downto tell you so. I know that James didn't do it. I know it, and Iwant you to start upon your work knowing it, too. Never let yourselfdoubt upon that point. We have known each other since we were littlechildren, and I know his faults as no one else does; but he is tootenderhearted to hurt a fly. Such a charge is absurd to anyone whoreally knows him."}

"Well, first of all, you have only to look at him. I don't believehe sleeps at night. He is down at the stables at all hours. His eyesare wild. It has all been too much for his nerves. Then there is hisconduct to Lady Beatrice!"
