1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 The Englishmen bowed and went upstairs.
2. "Who is this Athos?"
3. "Monsieur Porthos, be generous!"
4. "No, if it does not lighten."
5. "Porthos is wounded, then?"
6. "I am brave."

1. "To London!" cried Porthos; "and what the devil are we going todo in London?"
2. "A thousand pistoles, perhaps."
3. "What?" said the king, with hauteur.
4. "But how?"
5. 'Well, I will give it up, then," said the young woman, sighing."It is well as it is; say no more about it."
6. Fifty vessels were waiting to set out. Passing alongside one ofthem, D'Artagnan fancied he perceived on board it the woman ofMeung--the same whom the unknown gentleman had called Milady, andwhom D'Artagnan had thought so handsome; but thanks to thecurrent of the stream and a fair wind, his vessel passed soquickly that he had little more than a glimpse of her.The next day about nine o'clock in the morning, he landed at St.Valery. D'Artagnan went instantly in search of the inn, andeasily discovered it by the riotous noise which resounded fromit. War between England and France was talked of as near andcertain, and the jolly sailors were having a carousal.D'Artagnan made his way through the crowd, advanced toward thehost, and pronounced the word "Forward!" The host instantly madehim a sign to follow, went out with him by a door which openedinto a yard, led him to the stable, where a saddled horse awaitedhim, and asked him if he stood in need of anything else."I want to know the route I am to follow," said D'Artagnan."Go from hence to Blangy, and from Blangy to Neufchatel. AtNeufchatel, go to the tavern of the Golden Harrow, give thepassword to the landlord, and you will find, as you have here, ahorse ready saddled."

1. "Oh, Porthos's duchess is dressed by her husband's clerks,"said D'Artagnan, laughing. "Besides, Kitty would not liketo live in the Rue aux Ours. Isn't it so, Kitty?""I do not care where I live," said Kitty, "provided I amwell concealed, and nobody knows where I am."
2. All at once the captain stopped, as if struck by a suddensuspicion. This great hatred which the young traveler manifestedso loudly for this man, who--a rather improbable thing--hadstolen his father's letter from him--was there not some perfidyconcealed under this hatred? Might not this young man be sent byhis Eminence? Might he not have come for the purpose of laying asnare for him? This pretended D'Artagnan--was he not an emissaryof the cardinal, whom the cardinal sought to introduce intoTreville's house, to place near him, to win his confidence, andafterward to ruin him as had been done in a thousand otherinstances? He fixed his eyes upon D'Artagnan even more earnestlythan before. He was moderately reassured however, by the aspectof that countenance, full of astute intelligence and affectedhumility. "I know he is a Gascon," reflected he, "but he may beone for the cardinal was well as for me. Let us try him.""My friend," said he, slowly, "I wish, as the son of an ancientfriend--for I consider this story of the lost letter perfectlytrue--I wish, I say, in order to repair the coldness you may haveremarked in my reception of you, to discover to you the secretsof our policy. The king and the cardinal are the best offriends; their apparent bickerings are only feints to deceivefools. I am not willing that a compatriot, a handsome cavalier,a brave youth, quite fit to make his way, should become the dupeof all these artifices and fall into the snare after the exampleof so many others who have been ruined by it. Be assured that Iam devoted to both these all-powerful masters, and that myearnest endeavors have no other aim than the service of the king, and also the cardinal--one of the most illustrious geniuses thatFrance has ever produced.
3. "What do you say?"
4. Athos took off his hat, placed it on the end of his sword, and waved it in the air.
5. "That is to say, I visit an Englishwoman--the one I named.""Oh, ay! the fair woman on whose account I gave you advice, which naturally you took care not to adopt."
6. "Ah! The king's Musketeers are arrested by the Guards of thecardinal, are they?" continued M. de Treville, as furious atheart as his soldiers, but emphasizing his words and plungingthem, one by one, so to say, like so many blows of a stiletto, into the bosoms of his auditors. "What! Six of his Eminence'sGuards arrest six of his Majesty's Musketeers! MORBLEU! My partis taken! I will go straight to the louvre; I will give in myresignation as captain of the king's Musketeers to take alieutenancy in the cardinal's Guards, and if he refuses me,MORBLEU! I will turn abbe."

1. "What you demand of me is serious, then?"
2. "You will do me honor, monsieur," said D'Artagnan."Well, then, off to the nearest goldsmith's, and sell thatdiamond for the highest price you can get from him. However muchof a Jew he may be, he will give you at least eight hundredpistoles. Pistoles have no name, young man, and that ring has aterrible one, which may betray him who wears it.""Sell this ring, a ring which comes from my sovereign? Never!"said D'Artagnan.
3. "Then," said Milady, "since you are as generous as you areloving--"
4、 "You are laughing at me, and want to try me!" said D'Artagnan, whom anger began to take by the hair, as Minerva takes Achilles,in the ILLIAD.
5、 "I am taken!" shouted Athos, with all the power of his lungs."Go on, D'Artagnan! Spur, spur!" and he fired two pistols.D'Artagnan and Planchet did not require twice bidding; theyunfastened the two horses that were waiting at the door, leapedupon them, buried their spurs in their sides, and set off at fullgallop.
