1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "That is a colt you are running?"
2. "Perhaps I can help you to see that and one or two other things aswell," said Holmes. "Kindly summon your men, and I will try."Five minutes later, three policemen had assembled in the hall."In the outhouse you will find a considerable quantity of straw,"said Holmes. "I will ask you to carry in two bundles of it. I think itwill be of the greatest assistance in producing the witness whom Irequire. Thank you very much. I believe you have some matches inyour pocket Watson. Now, Mr. Lestrade, I will ask you all to accompanyme to the top landing."
3. The narratives of Watson, have accustomed the reader, no doubt, tothe fact that I do not waste words or disclose my thoughts while acase is actually under consideration. Dodd seemed surprised, butnothing more was said, and the three of us continued our journeytogether. in the train I asked Dodd one more question which I wishedour companion to hear.
4. Some three hours or so afterwards we were all in the train together, bound from Reading to the little Berkshire village. There wereSherlock Holmes, the hydraulic engineer, Inspector Bradstreet, ofScotland Yard, a plain-clothes man, and myself. Bradstreet hadspread an ordnance map of the county out upon the seat and was busywith his compasses drawing a circle with Eyford for its centre."There you are," said he. "That circle is drawn at a radius of tenmiles from the village. The place we want must be somewhere nearthat line. You said ten miles, I think, sir."
5. "They are still sounding the planking and probing the furniture inthe hope of finding them."
6. "I did not understand that you were merely an intermediary. Who isthe principal?"

1. "It's the Napoleon bust business again," said Lestrade. "Youseemed interested last night, Mr. Holmes, so I thought perhaps youwould be glad to be present now that the affair has taken a verymuch graver turn."
2. "Is Miss Dobney the only source of information? Surely she had othercorrespondents?"
3. Holmes moved the lamp, and we both bent over the sheet ofpaper, which showed by its ragged edge that it had indeed beentorn from a book. It was headed, "March, 1869," and beneath werethe following enigmatical notices:
4. "No, certainly not."
5. "But the girl, Holmes?"
6. We found our client still under the charge of his devoted nurse, butlooking considerably better than before. He rose from the sofa andgreeted us without difficulty when we entered.

1. Well, in the Diogenes Club, for example."
2. "How did you get here?"
3. SIR [it ran]:
4. "What was really foolish, madame, is that you have placed yourselfin the power of a band of rascals who may blackmail or give you away.""No, no! I am not so simple. Since I have promised to be frank, Imay say that no one, save Barney Stockdale and Susan, his wife, havethe least idea who their employer is. As to them, well, it is notthe first-" She smiled and nodded with a charming coquettish intimacy."I see. You've tested them before."
6. "'Why do you think that I lock this door?'

1. "Yes, gentlemen," said he, "it is the most famous pearl now existingin the world, and it has been my good fortune, by a connected chain ofinductive reasoning, to trace it from the Prince of Colonna'sbedroom at the Dacre Hotel, where it was lost, to the interior ofthis, the last of the six busts of Napoleon which were manufactured byGelder & Co., of Stepney. You will remember, Lestrade, the sensationcaused by the disappearance of this valuable jewel and the vainefforts of the London police to recover it. I was myself consultedupon the case, but I was unable to throw any light upon it.Suspicion fell upon the maid of the Princess, who was an Italian, and it was proved that she had a brother in London, but we failed totrace any connection between them. The maid's name was LucretiaVenucci, and there is no doubt in my mind that this Pietro who wasmurdered two nights ago was the brother. I have been looking up thedates in the old files of the paper, and I find that the disappearanceof pearl was exactly two days before the arrest of Beppo, for somecrime of violence- an event which took place in the factory ofGelder & Co., at the very moment when these busts were being made. Nowyou clearly see the sequence of events, though you see them, ofcourse, in the inverse order to the way in which they presentedthemselves to me. Beppo had the pearl in his possession. He may havestolen it from Pietro, he may have been Pietro's confederate, he mayhave been the go-between of Pietro and his sister. It is of noconsequence to us which is the correct solution.
2. The fierce old man said nothing, but still glared at my companion. With his savage eyes and bristling moustache he was wonderfully like atiger himself.
3. "That settles this exit. Then no doubt the lady went out the way shecame. I understand that this other passage leads only to theprofessor's room. There is no exit that way?"
4、 "Ah! He has left two nail-marks from his boot upon your linoleumjust where the light strikes it. No, thank you, I had some supper atWaterloo, but I'll smoke a pipe with you with pleasure."I handed him my pouch, and he seated himself opposite to me andsmoked for some time in silence. I was well aware that nothing butbusiness of importance would have brought him to me at such an hour,so I waited patiently until he should come round to it."I see that you are professionally rather busy just now," said he,glancing very keenly across at me.
5、 "How long had this maid Dolores been with her?"

"Well, certainly that is also a conceivable hypothesis," saidHolmes, smiling. "And now, Lord St. Simon, I think that I havenearly all my data. May I ask whether you were seated at thebreakfast-table so that you could see out of the window?""We could see the other side of the road and the Park.""Quite so. Then I do not think that I need to detain you longer. Ishall communicate with you."

"You wish to employ me as a consulting detective?"

"No; he is clean dazed. He just knows that he was lifted up as if bymagic and dropped as if by magic. Two at least were in it, and maybethree."

The woman rose and took from a drawer the photograph of a man. Hewas clearly a professional acrobat, a man of magnificent physique, taken with his huge arms folded across his swollen chest and a smilebreaking from under his heavy moustache- the self-satisfied smile ofthe man of many conquests.

{ "And yet you were with me then. But certainly my own impressionwas very superficial. For there was nothing to go by, and none ofthe parties had engaged my services. Perhaps you would care to readthe papers?"

"No sir, it is impossible. Before I got down the stair, I'd haveseen anyone in the passage. Besides, the door never opened, or I wouldhave heard it."

      "There was no man, sir."

"I followed him to the top of a very lofty stair, and there, rightunder the slates, were a couple of empty, dusty little rooms, uncarpeted and uncurtained, into which he led me. I had thought of agreat office with shining tables and rows of clerks, such as I wasused to, and I daresay I stared rather straight at the two deal chairsand one little table, which with a ledger and a waste-paper basket, made up the whole furniture.

{ "Is this a joke, Mr. Holmes? It is hardly a subject for pleasantry.""Not at all, your Grace. I was never more earnest in my life.""What do you mean, then?"

"Then I shall call upon you in a day, or in two days, withnews as to the box and the papers. I shall take your advice inevery particular." He shook hands with us and took his leave.Outside the wind still screamed and the rain splashed and patteredagainst the windows. This strange, wild story seemed to have cometo us from amid the mad elements--blown in upon us like a sheet ofsea-weed in a gale--and now to have been reabsorbed by them oncemore.
