1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Do you lose what you put in?"
2. When Hurstwood put the money back, his nature again resumed itsease and daring. No one had observed him. He was quite alone. No one could tell what he wished to do. He could work this thingout for himself.
3. "One hundred and fifty a week!" she murmured, when she was againalone. She found, after all--as what millionaire has not?--thatthere was no realising, in consciousness, the meaning of largesums. It was only a shimmering, glittering phrase in which lay aworld of possibilities.
4. "Don't run away from me, Carrie," he said gently. "Let meexplain. If you will only hear me out you will see where Istand. I tell you my wife is nothing to me. She hasn't beenanything for years or I wouldn't have ever come near you. I'mgoing to get a divorce just as soon as I can. I'll never see heragain. I'm done with all that. You're the only person I want.If I can have you I won't ever think of another woman again."
5. "Much obliged," said Hurstwood, softly, but the other paid nomore attention to him.
6. The youth raked in his chips, and Hurstwood came away, notwithout first stopping to count his remaining cash on the stair.

1. "Got to go straight home, have you?" he said.
2. "I guess I'll go out," he said to himself, and went, strollingnowhere in particular, but feeling somehow that he must go.
3. "We'll have a nice game of euchre."
4. Accordingly, when he came out he was glad to see the lobby clear, and hastened toward the stairs. He would get Carrie and go outby the ladies' entrance. They would have breakfast in some moreinconspicuous place.
5. "The man hasn't brought my coal, either," said Carrie, whoordered by the bushel.
6. "Do you remember how nervous you were that night at the Avery?"he asked.

1. He pushed her before him at the gate, stood between her and theticket man while the latter punched their tickets, so that shecould not see, and then hurried after.
2. "Well, now, just how much money would it take to buy a halfinterest here?" said Hurstwood, who saw seven hundred dollars ashis limit.
3. Now, in regard to his pursuit of women, he meant them no harm, because he did not conceive of the relation which he hoped tohold with them as being harmful. He loved to make advances towomen, to have them succumb to his charms, not because he was acold-blooded, dark, scheming villain, but because his inborndesire urged him to that as a chief delight. He was vain, he wasboastful, he was as deluded by fine clothes as any silly-headedgirl. A truly deep-dyed villain could have hornswaggled him asreadily as he could have flattered a pretty shop-girl. His finesuccess as a salesman lay in his geniality and the thoroughlyreputable standing of his house. He bobbed about among men, averitable bundle of enthusiasm--no power worthy the name ofintellect, no thoughts worthy the adjective noble, no feelingslong continued in one strain. A Madame Sappho would have calledhim a pig; a Shakespeare would have said "my merry child"; old, drinking Caryoe thought him a clever, successful businessman. Inshort, he was as good as his intellect conceived.
4. A long silence.
5. Drouet hesitated, now that he was in her presence, uncertain asto what course to pursue. He was no diplomat. He could neitherread nor see.
6. "Good-bye," she answered, taking his proffered hand.

1. After taking off his coat, he felt it incumbent upon him to makesome little report of his day.
2. "Well, that's delightful," said Hurstwood. "I'm so glad. I mustget over there to see you. When is the next rehearsal?"
3. "Did you see that?" said Shaughnessy one morning to Hurstwood, pointing to the real estate column in a copy of the "Herald,"which he held.
4、 "Stand up, why don't you?" said the girl at her right, withoutany form of introduction. "They won't care."
5、 Carrie remembered her triumph in the room. She tried to thinkshe could to it.

He would see whatthese detectives would do--what move his employers at Chicagowould make--then he would slip away--down to New York, where itwas easy to hide.
