1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "He furnishes it, it is true, but he does not know that he hasthat honor."
2. It took some time for D'Artagnan to resume this littledialogue; but then all the ideas of vengeance which he hadbrought with him had completely vanished. This womanexercised over him an unaccountable power; he hated andadored her at the same time. He would not have believedthat two sentiments so opposite could dwell in the sameheart, and by their union constitute a passion so strange, and as it were, diabolical.
3. "I love your devotedness," said Milady.
4. "It is feared that it may be the smallpox, sir," replied Porthos, desirous of taking his turn in the conversation; "and what isserious is that it will certainly spoil his face.""The smallpox! That's a great story to tell me, Porthos! Sickof the smallpox at his age! No, no; but wounded without doubt, killed, perhaps. Ah, if I knew! S'blood! Messieurs Musketeers,I will not have this haunting of bad places, this quarreling inthe streets, this swordplay at the crossways; and above all, Iwill not have occasion given for the cardinal's Guards, who arebrave, quiet, skillful men who never put themselves in aposition to be arrested, and who, besides, never allow themselvesto be arrested, to laugh at you! I am sure of it--they wouldprefer dying on the spot to being arrested or taking back a step.To save yourselves, to scamper away, to flee--that is good forthe king's Musketeers!"
5. "I say that love is a lottery in which he who wins, wins death! You are very fortunate to have lost, believe me, my dearD'Artagnan. And if I have any counsel to give, it is, alwayslose!"
6. "But what were you to do with that woman?" asked D'Artagnan, with anguish.

1. "And, now, when are we to go?" asked Athos.
2. "Pretty figures we shall cut on ponies while Aramis and Porthoscaracole on their steeds."
3. "The devil! Ah, I can understand that. It is a demand thatPorthos takes very ill when he is not in funds; but I know hemust be so at present."
4. The cardinal became as pale as death; lightning darted from hiseyes. He turned round as if to give an order to Cahusac andHoudiniere. Athos saw the movement; he made a step toward themuskets, upon which the other three friends had fixed their eyes, like men ill-disposed to allow themselves to be taken. Thecardinalists were three; the Musketeers, lackeys included, wereseven. He judged that the match would be so much the less equal,if Athos and his companions were really plotting; and by one ofthose rapid turns which he always had at command, all his angerfaded away into a smile.
5. In the meanwhile the promises of M. de Treville went onprosperously. One fine morning the king commanded M. deChevalier Dessessart to admit D'Artagnan as a cadet in hiscompany of Guards. D'Artagnan, with a sigh, donned his uniform, which he would have exchanged for that of a Musketeer at theexpense of ten years of his existence. But M. de Trevillepromised this favor after a novitiate of two years--a novitiatewhich might besides be abridged if an opportunity should presentitself for D'Artagnan to render the king any signal service, orto distinguish himself by some brilliant action. Upon thispromise D'Artagnan withdrew, and the next day he began service. Then it became the turn of Athos, Porthos, and Aramis to mountguard with D'Artagnan when he was on duty. The company of M. leChevalier Dessessart thus received four instead of one when itadmitted D'Artagnan.
6. "How so?"

1. And at these words, the Musketeer, in irreproachable costume, belted as usual, with a tolerably firm step, entered the cabinet.M. de Treville, moved to the bottom of his heart by this proof ofcourage, sprang toward him.
2. D'Artagnan descended by the staircase at which he hadentered, and found Athos and the four Musketeers waiting hisappearance, and beginning to grow uneasy. With a word,D'Artagnan reassured them; and Planchet ran to inform theother sentinels that it was useless to keep guard longer, ashis master had come out safe from the Palais-Cardinal.Returned home with Athos, Aramis and Porthos inquiredeagerly the cause of the strange interview; but D'Artagnanconfined himself to telling them that M. de Richelieu hadsent for him to propose to him to enter into his guards withthe rank of ensign, and that he had refused.
3. "My faith!" replied D'Artagnan, recognizing Athos, who, after thedressing performed by the doctor, was returning to his ownapartment. "I did not do it intentionally, and not doing itintentionally, I said 'Excuse me.' It appears to me that this isquite enough. I repeat to you, however, and this time on my wordof honor--I think perhaps too often--that I am in haste, greathaste. Leave your hold, then, I beg of you, and let me go wheremy business calls me."
4. "We are discovered!"
5. "Certainly; but if you love me as much as you say," repliedD'Artagnan, "do you not entertain a little fear on myaccount?"
6. Milady reseated herself, foaming. The officer leaned forward, looked at her in his turn, and appeared surprised to see thatface, just before so beautiful, distorted with passion and almosthideous. The artful creature at once comprehended that she wasinjuring herself by allowing him thus to read her soul; shecollected her features, and in a complaining voice said: "In thename of heaven, sir, tell me if it is to you, if it is to yourgovernment, if it is to an enemy I am to attribute the violencethat is done me?"

1. "The idea came into your mind to avenge yourself on this man, didit not?" cried Felton.
2. "That's it!" said D'Artagnan, "I had forgotten that he was only aMusketeer for a time."
3. At the same instant the woman inside drew a second handkerchieffrom her pocket, and exchanged it for that which had just beenshown to her. Then some words were spoken by the two women. Atlength the shutter closed. The woman who was outside the windowturned round, and passed within four steps of D'Artagnan, pullingdown the hood of her mantle; but the precaution was too late,D'Artagnan had already recognized Mme. Bonacieux.Mme. Bonacieux! The suspicion that it was she had crossed themind of D'Artagnan when she drew the handkerchief from herpocket; but what probability was there that Mme. Bonacieux, whohad sent for M. Laporte in order to be reconducted to the Louvre, should be running about the streets of Paris at half past elevenat night, at the risk of being abducted a second time? This must be, then, an affair of importance; and what is the mostimportant affair to a woman of twenty-five! Love. But was it on her own account, or on account of another, that sheexposed herself to such hazards? This was a question the youngman asked himself, whom the demon of jealousy already gnawed, being in heart neither more nor less than an accepted lover. There was a very simple means of satisfying himself whither Mme.Bonacieux was going; that was to follow her. This method was sosimple that D'Artagnan employed it quite naturally andinstinctively.
4、 "Nothing easier. We will send my brother's servant back to Bethune, whom, as I told you, we can trust. He shall assume a disguise, andplace himself in front of the convent. If the emissaries of thecardinal arrive, he will take no notice; if it is Monsieur d'Artagnanand his friends, he will bring them to us."
5、 "Then you would employ for me your arm which has alreadyacquired so much renown?"
