1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Well, my dear," he asked, "how did you come out?"
2. "There, there," he said, "you mustn't cry. Won't you listen tome? Listen to me a minute, and I'll tell you why I came to dothis thing. I couldn't help it. I assure you I couldn't. Won'tyou listen?"
3. Carrie merely hastened her steps and took the Sixth Avenue car.Her head was so full of the wonder of it that she had time fornothing else.
4. The whole of this conversation was such a shock that, coming asit did after all the other worry of the past week, it sufficed toinduce a deep gloom and moral revulsion in Hurstwood. What hurthim most was the fact that he was being pursued as a thief. Hebegan to see the nature of that social injustice which sees butone side--often but a single point in a long tragedy. All thenewspapers noted but one thing, his taking the money. How andwherefore were but indifferently dealt with. All thecomplications which led up to it were unknown. He was accusedwithout being understood.
5. "Because," answered Carrie, "I never did."
6. Then he turned and saw the papers. With half a sigh he picked upthe "World."

1. There was a little ache in her fancy of all he described. Herinsignificance in the presence of so much magnificence faintlyaffected her. She realised that hers was not to be a round ofpleasure, and yet there was something promising in all thematerial prospect he set forth. There was something satisfactoryin the attention of this individual with his good clothes. Shecould not help smiling as he told her of some popular actress ofwhom she reminded him. She was not silly, and yet attention ofthis sort had its weight.
2. "I don't know what it is about music," she started to say, movedby the inexplicable longings which surged within her; "but italways makes me feel as if I wanted something--I----"
3. As yet, Hurstwood had only a thought of pleasure withoutresponsibility. He did not feel that he was doing anything tocomplicate his life. His position was secure, his home-life, ifnot satisfactory, was at least undisturbed, his personal libertyrather untrammelled. Carrie's love represented only so muchadded pleasure. He would enjoy this new gift over and above hisordinary allowance of pleasure. He would be happy with her andhis own affairs would go on as they had, undisturbed.
4. Hurstwood said nothing. He had seen the new things she wasbuying; the way she was neglecting household duties; thereadiness with which she was slipping out afternoons and staying. He felt that something was going to happen. All at once shespoke:
5. The latter looked Hurstwood over, and seeing something keen andintellectual in his eyes, said:
6. "Our lease expires when?" asked Hurstwood, thinking. "NextFebruary, isn't it?"

1. When the conductor had gone again Hurstwood felt relieved.
2. "Yes, and a swift-pacer," laughed Drouet.
3. "There," said Hurstwood, indicating the direction by a cast ofhis eye, "the man with the silk hat."
4. "What are you looking for?"
5. There was a look of confusion and pain in her face. She waswondering why that miserable thought must be brought in. She wasstruck as by a blade with the miserable provision which wasoutside the pale of marriage.
6. "Do you lose what you put in?"

1. Amid the tinsel and shine of her state walked Carrie, unhappy. As when Drouet took her, she had thought: "Now I am lifted intothat which is best"; as when Hurstwood seemingly offered her thebetter way: "Now am I happy." But since the world goes its waypast all who will not partake of its folly, she now found herselfalone. Her purse was open to him whose need was greatest. Inher walks on Broadway, she no longer thought of the elegance ofthe creatures who passed her. Had they more of that peace andbeauty which glimmered afar off, then were they to be envied.
2. Again, time hanging heavily on his hands, he went home early, andthis continued for several days, each day the need to huntpaining him, and each day disgust, depression, shamefacednessdriving him into lobby idleness.
3. "I wasn't intending to go," said the manager easily. "I'llsubscribe, of course. How are things over there?"
4、 "I get twelve," said Carrie.
5、 "Oh, because," she said, "I wouldn't want to."

Hurstwood shifted by curious means through a long summer andfall. A small job as janitor of a dance hall helped him for amonth. Begging, sometimes going hungry, sometimes sleeping inthe park, carried him over more days. Resorting to thosepeculiar charities, several of which, in the press of hungrysearch, he accidentally stumbled upon, did the rest. Toward thedead of winter, Carrie came back, appearing on Broadway in a newplay; but he was not aware of it. For weeks he wandered aboutthe city, begging, while the fire sign, announcing herengagement, blazed nightly upon the crowded street of amusements.Drouet saw it, but did not venture in.
